Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Project

My final year project was the creation of concept art for the 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: the story of the film' book, allowing it to be animated. This books story was based off the musical film screenplay written by Roald Dahl and Ken Hughes. I originally picked this version as it's far better known then the original Ian Flemming books and has a more comical theme.

The project outcome was to develop character designs for the main cast, environments and a key scene for a 2D children's animation. The target audience for the final production would be young children but the concept designs would be seen by the producers for the show. So the designs had to be pleasing for children but be loose enough that it didn't stifle additional changes later in the production. The development process for the project was to redesign and modernise most of the content as it had dated from its 1960's origins and to keep it fun and colourful. The production process was to hand draw all the lines before being scanned and coloured in Photoshop. I work by creating coloured base layers then turn them into clipping masks before adding detail, shadow and highlight layers on top. With this method it allows me to make changes to each individual layer without effecting the rest of them, but full control over all of the layers using the clipping mask.

It was a hugely enjoyable project simply because it really allowed me to be as imaginative as I could be.
